The Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry is focused on providing dental care to children and adolescents, including children with special health care needs, in a child as well as parent friendly manner, keeping in mind the goal to build life-long trust between the dentist and the child, facilitating continuing oral health care well into their adulthood. The department accomplishes this by training their staff and instill in students the necessary principles of behaviour shaping, behaviour modification and management skillsets, as well as an in-depth knowledge into the mechanics of oral health problems of children across the various age groups.
The department conducts and participates in various community outreach programmes, including school dental health programmes, both in conjunction with other departments and independently. Regular peripheral treatment visits are made to rural centre clinics for the provision of affordable quality dental care to pediatric patients across the district. It also hosts a specialized branch offering dental care to children with special needs in an integrated environment with the medical fraternity on a regular basis as part of the NSPECC programme initiative. The department also hosts various state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for clinical practice and research in its field.
