PERIODONTICS

The Department of Periodontics was started in the year 1985 with the B.D.S program. M.D.S. course was started in the year 1991 and the sanction for PhD courses was obtained in 2009. The Department has also started  the  certificate program in periodontal micro surgery in 2017. The Department has a staff strength of 10 postgraduate qualified faculty comprising of 4 Professors, 1 Additional Professor , 4 Readers & 2 Senior lecturers.

The department was initially under the Mangalore University in 1985 ,subsequently under the RGUHS, Bangalore from 1998 and now under Nitte University from 2008 onwards. The syllabus of both B.D.S and M.D.S has been modified and upgraded under Nitte University

The department is equipped with a Department Library and digital library, 3 computer terminals with Printer, Scanner,  LCD projector and also Internet facility. The facilities added on in the last 5 years includes Diode Laser , Physiodispenser ,new dental units etc.   In addition, the college  also has a central library with adequate number of books & journals for the students & faculty. The faculty in charge of the class conducts class tests after every 5 lecture classes to assess the student understanding of the subject. A group of 3-4 students are allotted to each staff as staff guides and regular counseling sessions are conducted every month where the students progress is evaluated and he is given an opportunity to explain his difficulties if any.

The faculty also attends faculty development programs like Post Graduate Teachers training programs, clinical skill development programmes conducted at National level and also other teacher training programs to keep themselves abreast with the latest and to improve their teaching skills.

The department conducted the 13th National Post Graduate convention of the Indian society of Periodontology and also collaborates with the Department of Periodontics of all the 5 Dental Colleges in and around Mangalore and regularly conducts and participates in CDE programs where topics of academic  interest are discussed.

There are several ongoing and completed research projects by the faculty and students. The faculty has about 100 publications in the last 5 years in various State, National and International journals.

The students are assessed on a continuous basis in addition to their sessional/Term examination by Regular Class tests, end posting vivas, Case discussions etc. This helps the faculty to assess the weak students and pay more attention to them.

Most of the students who have passed from this Department are well placed all over the country in various teaching Institutions and in foreign countries as teachers/clinicians etc.

  1. Smitha Shetty won the Best Scientific Paper Award in delegate Category at 42nd Karnataka State Dental Conference held at B.C.Road on 18- 20 Dec 2014
  1. Santhosh Shenoy B. won the Best Scientific Paper Award in delegate Category at 43rd Karnataka State Dental Conference held at B.C.Road on 18- 20 Dec 2015.
  1. Dr Anahita Punj has secured Merit Certificate for scoring the highest aggregate marks  in MDS from Nitte University for the year 2014 -17.
  1. Dr Roshni Jaiswal has secured Merit Certificate for scoring the second highest aggregate marks in MDS from Nitte University for the year 2014 - 17.
  1. Mohammed Safwan won the Indian Society of Periodontology merit award for scoring the highest marks in the subject of Periodontology (BDS) in the country , at the National conference of the society at Kolkatta on November 24th 2017
  1. Nirosha Narendran won the best researcher award (consolation prize) for the research proposal at the National conference on dental research conducted by the Cochin Periodontal society on September 18 – 19 , 2017
  1. Smitha Shetty won the best scientific paper award (review category) at the 42nd National conference of the Indian society of Periodontology at Kolkata on November 24th-26th 2017
  1. Amitha Rao won the consolation award (2nd prize)- Basic research category at the 42nd National conference of the Indian society of Periodontology  at Kolkata on November 24th-26th 2017
  1. Shrimaa Kateel won the best paper (NITTE university project) guided by Dr.Amitha Ramesh in 45th Karnataka state IDA and 4th interstate IDA conference held in Davangere from 14th to 17th December 2017.

  1. Dr.Biju Thomas was elected as the  40th National President  of  the    Indian  Society  of  Periodontology (I S P) for the year 2014-15 .
  2. Dr.Biju Thomas  was  elected as the  President  of  the  Indian  Society  of  Prosthodontics  Restorative  Periodontics (I S P R P) for the year 2014-15 .
  3. 3.Dr Biju Thomas was nominated as Advisory Board Member – Manipal Journal of Dental Sciences (2016-18) .
  4. Dr Biju Thomas was nominated as Editorial Board Member –Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology (2015 – 18).
