Department of Prosthodontics
The Department of Prosthodontics was established in 1985 and has been conducting a comprehensive training program in dental prosthetics for the undergraduate students of ABSMIDS and for students enrolled in the postgraduate program since its inception.
The department trains 500 undergraduate students including interns and 30 postgraduate students at any given time of the academic year.
The Department of Prosthodontics provides the following treatment free of cost to all patients at ABSMIDS:
Complete Denture Prosthesis
Removable Partial Denture Prosthesis
Fixed Partial Denture Prosthesis
Implant Supported Prosthesis
Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation
Management and treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
Advanced Esthetic Rehabilitation
Undergraduate students are trained in Dental Material Sciences and are given pre-clinical prosthodontic training in both removable and fixed prosthesis. The department”s dental materials, pre-clinical and phantom head laboratories are able to cater to the many needs of the undergraduates from the 1st year to Final year and also to those of the postgraduate students. The undergraduate students are trained to manage both completely edentulous and partially dental patients in their three years of clinical training in the department.
The postgraduate section has an annual intake of 10 postgraduate students and provides advanced training in clinical and laboratory prosthodontics for its 30 resident postgraduate students. The postgraduate clinic is well equipped with modern dental chairs for all students and staff. The postgraduate laboratory has been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including dedicated metal casting and ceramic units for all its treatment needs. All the required laboratory facilites are available in-house.
The department also has a special surgical section for Dental Implant Surgical and prosthetic procedures which is at par with international implant surgical standards.
Postgraduate students are also trained in Maxillofacial Prosthetics with support from the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Craniofacial Surgery and the Departments of General Surgery and ENT at the K.S. Hegde Medical Academy and Hospital.
The Department is also a recognized center for the Ph.D program in Prosthodontics, and has a number of national research papers and publications to its credit.
The Department of Prosthodontics conducts regular One-Day-Denture Camps wherein complete denture prosthesis are fabricated in a single day. This treatment is provided free of cost.
The department also conducts regular Continuing Dental Education Programmes, playing host to a number of reputed national and international speakers, keeping its students and staff up-to-date with the latest developments in Prosthodontics and Dentistry.
