Established in 1985, A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences is recognized by the Dental Council of India and the Malaysian Dental Council. It is an affiliate of Okayama University Dental School, Japan and an academic mentor to Oman Dental College Sultanate of Oman. In association with the Smile Train Organization, USA and Cleft Children International, Switzerland, the institution has the unique distinction of being at the forefront of treatment & research in cleft lip and palate & other craniofacial anomalies in the country. The Institution also has MoUs with Radboud University, The Netherlands and the Universitede Paul Sabatier, France for faculty and student exchanges. In accordance with the motto ‘Service to Humanity’ and ‘Dental Healthcare Delivery at the Doorstep’, the college has established a network of 21 Rural Dental Health Centres since 1991, spread over a radius of 150km. It is a matter of great pride that the college is ranked 6th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022 by MHRD, GoI among the Dental Colleges in India. It is ranked 3 rd among the Private Dental Colleges in India (The Week magazine’s ‘Hansa Research Survey 2021’). The Institution enjoys the distinct honour of being conferred with ‘The Best Community Dental Service Activities Award’ among all the dental colleges in the country, by the International College of Dentists, USA on several occasions for promoting good Oral Health & Hygiene among the public and providing free dental treatment to the rural and under privileged section of the society. The institution was awarded ‘The Best Outreach Program Award’ by the Indian Association of Public Health Dentistry at the National Level in the years 2017 &2020. The institution has also bagged the coveted ‘Sushruta Award’ for the Best Community Outreach Program at the National level instituted by the IDA Head Office. The Institution has made a foray into the Limca Book Records 2020-22 for ‘The Maximum Number of Complete Dentures Fabricated and Delivered in a Single Day'. 149 completely edentulous needy patients were given complete dentures in a single day free of cost. The concept of ‘Single Day Denture Camps’ was conceptualized for the first time in the county way back in the year 1991 by A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. The Institution has recently introduced an ‘Interns Exit Assessment’ to assess the attitude, knowledge &skill levels of the interns.
With a 425-chair dental teaching hospital with comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic & rehabilitation services, A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences offers the students all the required infrastructure for undergraduate and postgraduate training in dentistry. It also gives them the required exposure to facilities like Advanced Dental Imaging (CBCT), CAD CAM Systems, Operating Microscope, Intra Oral Scanner, Dental Implants, Cleft-lip & Palate repair etc.
In addition to clinical training at the teaching hospital, the University places a strong emphasis on community-based training and creates opportunities for students through innovative programs for interaction with local communities at its 21 rural health centres and two rural tertiary care hospitals. These centres provide ample clinical material and diverse training opportunities ranging from hospital-based practice to community embedded care.
The faculty provide support to learners with diverse needs through a mentorship program. Students are also encouraged to take up short-term research projects. E-Learning resources are provided to augment self-directed learning. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled. Assistance is provided to students to prepare for competitive PG entrance examinations.
The Institution has incorporated high-end equipment such as CBCT Radiographic Imaging System, CAD CAM Systems Lingual Angulation & Positioning Device Endo-Surgical Microscope, Intra Oral Scanner, Aligners System & 3D Printer High end Camera and Lighting for 2-way AV System, Digitalized Case Management System, Digitalized Case Record System 3D Diagnostic Software ensuring that students remain at the forefront of their chosen field.
Students can avail medical and dental treatment at the NABH accredited, 1000-bed, multispecialty Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital and the A B Shetty Dental College Hospital located in the campus.
The Wellness Centre aims to create a stress-free campus by promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive mental health amongst students. It provides mentoring and counselling services for students in a confidential and supportive environment. The trained staff of the Centre offer a helpline for students in distress and assist in resolving academic personal and social concerns.
An expansive and well-stocked library with nearly 8350 volumes and subscriptions to over 120 academic journals, guarantees access to the latest developments in the field of dentistry while nurturing a strong base of knowledge. Additional aids come in the form of a digitized book bank and a Wi-Fi enabled campus to augment and enrich further, the learning experience.
The college provides safe, secure, clean and well-furnished hostels with hygienic vegetarian food. The hostel mess is maintained by an app “Paaka-shale” which gives students the freedom to pre-book their favorite non-vegetarian dishes apart from their regular vegetarian menu. Recreation facilities include indoor & outdoor games and television. A resident warden is available to ensure that students are safe. Healthcare requirements like doctor-on-call facility to handle medical emergencies are available. The hostel has zero tolerance towards ragging, use of tobacco and drug abuse. Security personnel are placed round-the-clock in all the hostels.
The campus has a 24000 sq.ft. Indoor Sports Complex, which houses a floodlit basketball court, four shuttle badminton courts, a tennis court, a volleyball court and a throwball court. An air-conditioned gymnasium and multi-purpose playground with running track are also available in the campus. Full-time physical education teachers are available in the campus to train students in sports activities.
A commercial bank with ATM, cafeterias, general store, Wi-Fi connectivity and round-the-clock security are available within the campus.
Free transport facilities are provided to students through a fleet of buses plying regularly from various points in the city to the college and back. Use of bicycles and electric car for commuting within the campus is encouraged. This is an initiative taken to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a green campus.
