Established in the year 1985, the Department Orthodontics and Dento-facial Orthopaedics has been at the forefront in the field of Orthodontics involving itself in imparting quality education and delivering health care of the highest order. Equipped with state of the art physical facilities, modern clinical equipment, and materials, highly experienced faculty, the department offers A to Z treatment modalities available in the field of Orthodontics. The Department is located on the 5th floor of the A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, with a built area of more than 10000 Sq. Ft
Keeping pace with technological advances, the department has been continuously upgrading itself to the use of Digital Technology in diagnosis and treatment planning. The recently installed one of its kind, 3Dimension simulation software along with CBCT soft wares and other recently procured digital gadgets are the major steps in this direction.
The department delivers comprehensive Orthodontic Management of Cleft Lip and Palate cases as well as other Craniofacial Disorders through a team approach. The Cleft Child International (CCI), Switzerland fund the charitable Cleft Lip and Palate Program, which treats more than 1000 cleft cases in a year
Keeping pace with technological advances, the department has been continuously upgrading itself to the use of Digital Technology in diagnosis and treatment planning. The recently installed one of its kind, 3Dimension simulation software along with CBCT soft wares and other recently procured digital gadgets are the major steps in this direction.
The faculty and the PG students are involved extensively in the research, publications, and presentations at National and International forums. CDE and workshops are also conducted regularly. The department has received research grants from external agencies such as ICMR, BRNS and also from Nitte (Deemed to be University).
The social concern of the department is reflected in the services provided at 11 rural centres where PG s and the Faculty are posted on an appointment basis
The department is divided into the undergraduate and postgraduate sections. An undergraduate student is initially introduced to the basics of Orthodontics through lectures, seminars, and discussions from the 2nd year BDS onwards. The 3rd year and final year students get well acquainted with the Diagnosis and Treatment Planning which is the prime requisite to prepare them towards their success in clinical practice. They are also trained in the clinical management of mild to moderate types of malocclusions.
Highlights of the under graduate training programme:
The PG course in Orthodontics and Dento-facial Orthopaedics was started in the year 1989 affiliated to the Mangalore University. In 1995 it was affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka and since the year 2009, the course is under Nitte, Deemed to be University, Mangalore, Karnataka, India, with an intake of 09 students annually.
Highlights of the Post Graduate Training Programme:
The department has embraced the digital age by the extensive use of ICT to streamline the academic, research and clinical activities of the department..
