A guest lecture and hands-on workshop titled “Illuminate and Investigate: Revolutionizing Pediatric Dentistry with Innovative Laser techniques”

The Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry conducted a guest lecture and hands-on workshop titled “Illuminate and Investigate: Revolutionizing Pediatric Dentistry with Innovative Laser techniques” on 14th June 2024. Dr. M. S. Saravana Kumar, Professor & HoD, Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, Sri Venkatesheshwara Dental College, Chennai was the resource person. The program commenced with an invocation song by Dr. Nishi Joshi, I MDS who was also the master of ceremony. Prof. (Dr.) Manju R., HoD, delivered the welcome address, followed by the presidential address by Prof. (Dr.) U. S. Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean. Prof. (Dr.) Mithra N. Hegde, Vice Principal also addressed the gathering. Dr. Ananthu, Lecturer, introduced the resource person to the audience. Dr. M S Saravana Kumar congratulated the growth of ABSMIDS into an institute of global standards. He also spoke about the necessity of employing lasers in pediatric minor oral surgical procedures. Prof. (Dr.) Kavita Rai, Coordinator of the program, concluded the inaugural session with a vote of thanks.

The forenoon lecture session commenced with Dr. M S Saravana Kumar speaking on the different types of lasers and their applications in pediatric dentistry. He provided comprehensive guidance on these aspects, facilitating better understanding of the same among participants. The lecture session was followed by a networking lunch, which served as a platform for participants to interact and exchange knowledge.

The post lunch session saw Dr. Saravana Kumar conduct the hands-on workshop by demonstrating the different techniques of laser application on animal models and helping the participants to practice the same. The attendees gained practical insights into the techniques and applications of lasers. The session concluded with Dr. Saravana Kumar correcting the condition of tongue tie in a 7-year-old child by employing the use of lasers. A total of 60 participants from AJ Institute of Dental Sciences, Yenepoya Dental College, Srinivas Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal College of Dental Sciences Mangalore, Manipal College of Dental Sciences Manipal, Mahe Institute of Dental Sciences and Kannur Dental College, along with a few private practitioners attended the program.
