Periodontal screening camp

The Dept. of Periodontology jointly with the Dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Craniofacial Surgery organized a periodontal screening camp on 30th December 2022 under the guidance of Prof (Dr) Vikram Shetty, Head, Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Craniofacial Surgery and Prof (Dr) Amitha Ramesh, Head, Dept. of Periodontology. This provided a platform to students and staff to learn more about periodontal evaluation and treatment planning for people with cleft lip, cleft palate and other craniofacial conditions.

The guest of honor was Professor (Dr.) Hermann F. Sailer, Founder & President, Cleft Children International.

More than 800 patients with cleft and other craniofacial disorders were screened, to aid in diagnosing and treating gingival and periodontal diseases early. Individuals were also given guidance on how to maintain good oral hygiene and how to schedule future treatments.

Objectives of the camp:

• To comprehend the periodontal and oral hygiene issues confronting the cleft community
• To determine the affected individual's gingival inflammatory and oral hygiene status and develop a treatment plan to reduce both.
• To facilitate patients' learning about the importance of good oral hygiene and proper oral hygiene maintenance methods.

The camp created opportunities for students to develop a sense of teamwork. They also learned to take responsibility, handle periodontal screening expeditiously and develop management skills to conduct social surveys & analyses. The camp was remarkable and productive for both students and faculty of the department of periodontology.
